My Redesign
Lately, I’ve been learning lots and lots of new things about Web design and development – but my website really didn’t show that. So, I realigned redesigned made a new version! Where are we now then, version 3? Feels like version 21 to me.
But here we are now, many hidden iterations later. I’m fairly happy how it turned out, especially since I actually managed to make it somewhat pretty! I have never studied any arts, so being artsy (the graphic design part) is a struggle at times. Creativity is hard, man!
From a vision to choosing WordPress
I started with a vision; a vision of me standing on a web page. I don’t really remember what inspired me, but I drew a quick sketch, so I wouldn’t forget the concept. Later, when I had time, I started to design the site around the idea of me standing on a web page, which I decided to be the home page. I also experimented with the idea of me being on the about page, but the current implementation was better.
I also wanted to learn more about WordPress, so I created the new design as a theme for WordPress. I also used the progressive enhancement -technique (CSS3 bits are great) and a 960 grid system, split into 24 columns with 20 pixel gutters.
Snaps from along the way
I made the decision to design the front page first, in Photoshop, and I’m not completely sure if this was wise. I think I spent way too much time just polishing details of the home page. I swear, from now on I will make my mockup in markup!
Changes in the Future
My site is never complete, and I will always be experimenting different things here. It seems that this is the fate of personal websites. At least a few things are gonna get realigned here (hint: work items).
There’s also some stuff still that needs fixing: no bigger images for work pieces and the JavaScript lightbox -script sucks. Not much, just small things.
